How does the speaker feel about his decision ?
Let me begin by saying that I love this poem. It is very engaging, and embedded in this poem is the topic of choice--which any reader would be able to relate to; isn't that so Robert Frost though? His poetry , written so long ago, is still so relevant to readers today. This is the perfect poem when having students analyze growth of a character or speaker in text. At the beginning of the poem, the speaker is befuddled about even making a choice which is evident by the way in which he lingers before making a decision right away. When the speaker finally does make a choice based on how each road looks (one with wear and one without) , at the very end of the poem, he mentions that "it has made all of the difference" (the road that he took. This shows that the speaker seems to be content with his choice. It is not explicitly said, but when I usually hear someone say that it has made the difference, it is usually signifying a positive experience. Maybe the road not taken is the title because it describes how he chose the the road not taken by others, but how that road turned out to be the correct one for him, that has made all the difference. Maybe it should be titled The road least taken or maybe I wrong about everything and Frost is not here to defend himself. :)
